He started his career as a child actor in the Broadway production of The Dark at the Top of the Stairs by Elia Kazan. He was in a 1964 off-Broadway production Rumplestiltskin, a film by Elaine May. Kaplan made the movie Night Call Nurses (1972) and returned to New York. It was a big hit and he was offered another film, The Student Teachers which he co-wrote and co-edited.
