Michael Cogdill, born George Michael Cogdill, is an American journalist, news anchor, novelist, film producer, and screenwriter. Many of his works in television have been featured in such notable stations as NBC’s Today Show, CNBC, MSNBC, as well as CNN. In addition to prominence and expertise, he has garnered 29 Emmy Awards and a National Edward R. Murrow Award for his works in television.

He was born in 1961 to a truck driver and a mill worker. As he was still young, he did some small jobs in his spare time. They included mowing lawns, cleaning horse stalls, and working as a production assistant on film sets. He attended the North Buncombe High School located in Weaverville, North Carolina. He graduated in 1979 then joined the University of North Carolina Asheville. Michael graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in communications emphasizing on the liberal arts.

His television career started just after college. He worked at WECT, an NBC- affiliated TV station based in Wilmington, North Carolina. A while later, he transferred to WWAY, the Wilmington ABC affiliate. Soon after, he moved on to WRDW-TV, a CBS-affiliate in Augusta, a city-county in Georgia. After all the moving, he landed in Greenville, South Carolina working for WYFF, an affiliate to NBC, in 1989. He began building his career in the area and soon after became the most decorated anchor man in South Carolina television history.
His prominence as a journalist came with his coverage of the story of Susan Smith, a Union, South Carolina woman convicted of murdering her two young sons in 1994. Michael Cogdill wrote and released the novel, She-Rain. The book is set in rural western North Carolina in the 1920s.
Michael’s book, She-Rain, was adapted into a film by the filmmaker, Richard O’ Sullivan in 2014. The filmmaker had plans to produce the property as a feature film in partnership with Michael Cogdill’s film and television production company HeartStrong Media.
